Product variants are choices within a product, such as size, finish or capacity. The interface should make the selected combination clear and update any information that depends on it. Customers need to know whether changing a choice changes the price, image, availability or specification.
A practical approach
Decide which differences belong as variants and which deserve separate products. A genuinely different function may need its own page, while a colour choice can remain within one product. Keep option names consistent across product data, order summaries and fulfilment records.
Your checklist
- Label each option in plain language.
- Identify unavailable combinations without ambiguity.
- Confirm selected choices in the cart and order summary.
For example
For a storage product, capacity may change both price and physical size. Updating only the price leaves the buyer uncertain about the item they will receive, so the relevant specification should change too.
