A content inventory is a list of the material your website already contains. Include pages, downloads, images and embedded tools, not just the main navigation. Record what each item does for visitors and whether the business can still stand behind its claims.

A practical approach

Use the inventory to make deliberate keep, revise, merge or remove decisions. A page can be old and still useful; a new page can be inaccurate. Assign an owner to each decision so outdated information does not survive simply because nobody was responsible for checking it.

Your checklist

  • Record each item’s URL, purpose and owner.
  • Flag obsolete prices, dates, team details and unsupported claims.
  • Map retained material to the proposed site structure.

For example

A manufacturer might find technical brochures scattered across old product pages. Gathering them into an inventory reveals duplicate versions and helps the team identify which document should accompany each current product.
